A high-performance computing competence center is being established in Latvia

Riga Technical University’s HPC Center together with Institute of Numerical Modeling of University of Latvia have started to implement an ambitious European Union project, the aim of which is to create an international network of high-performance computing competence centers. One of the centers will be in Latvia.

Competence Centers established during the project National Competence Centers in the framework of EuroHPC (EuroCC) will provide a common support structure to promote the use of HPC opportunities in higher education, research, public administration, and industry. The Competence Centers will bring together the knowledge, experience, and computing resources available all over the Europe.

The project started on September 1, 2020, and all33 countries will cooperate in its implementation for two years. The total funding of the EuroCC project exceeds 56 million euros.

Simultaneously with the EuroCC project, the related project CASTIEL was launched, the aim of which is to coordinate cooperation between the national competence centers involved in the EuroCC project. CASTIEL will provide information exchange, education and internship opportunities, as well as promote business development opportunities and cooperation with industry.

The EuroCC and CASTIEL projects will contribute to the development of a high-end HPC ecosystem in Europe. These projects are supported by the European Commission and its joint undertaking EuroHPC, in which the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science is also involved. The coordinator of the two major projects – EuroCC and CASTIEL – is the HPC Center (HLRS) at the University of Stuttgart. Find out more about EuroHPC projects, including EuroCC and CASTIEL, in the PrimeurMagazin video interview given by Bastian Koller from HLRS.
